{our poor hairy son}

Jericho has been a little off lately....especially the last few weeks. We originally thought he'd injured his back legs because he was having severe trouble getting up and his legs even completely gave out a few times...Well, after $600 in vet bills over the past few weeks, we finally figured it out...Poor Jericho has diabetes! I actually figured it out on my own before we took him to our new vet by researching his symptoms online, so I was prepared when they confirmed it today.

He's in pretty bad shape - the vet ordered immediate insulin injections twice daily. He wanted to start today, but decided it would be ok to start tomorrow after he got the type of insulin he wanted to use. I was so glad I decided to take him in - even though I did it with both kids by myself...NOT a fun experience....Brandon was out of town training for his new job - he recently accepted a great job offer & we are so excited to be employed again - we've decided self-employment is not for us - too unpredictable!

So, tomorrow begins a whole new world of caring for our sick puppy for the rest of his life - which, we hope, will be many more years! He will get insulin shots twice a day, a special ($130/month!!!) kind of dog food twice daily, and many, many vet visits to monitor his glucose levels. It is going to cost us a fortune and be a lot of work - the shots & food have to be given on a fairly strict time schedule - but, we'd do pretty much anything for our first baby...

Here are some pictures I took of him a few weeks ago...he just turned 9 on May 3rd. I can still vividly remember driving with Brandon & his mom to Amarillo to pick him up from the breeder when he was 6 weeks old...

Wonderful pics of him, Jaimee. I really like the one of his one eye. Our dog just turned 10 and we think all the time of her aging and how she will do. So far so good.

Poor Jericho! And poor you, dealing with the worry and cost of a sick baby! He is such a gorgeous dog, and so lucky to have such an awesomely caring family.

Oh your poor puppy! Sorry to hear he has diabetes, but at least you were able to catch it. He's such a beautiful dog...great shots of him!

Jericho is so beautiful Jaimee. I can just picture him as a puppy....A big fuzz ball. :0) Im so sorry he is sick. But I feel you on the vet bills. We just spent $1000.00 to get two abscessed teeth removed from our Lulu. OUCH! For her and our bank account!

Great exposure too. You could have so easily blown out his white fur (like I seem to do pretty often lately). And his eyes are beautiful in every shot.

The poor puppy dog! Jericho still has spunk, though, as I can see from the pics. He's all heart and such a beautiful dog. I'm so glad you've found the cause of his problems. His symptoms remind me of Tasha - now I'm wondering if that could have been an issue with her. Fortunately, you've caught this soon enough that you can avoid a lot of problems with proper treatment. He's such a good baby!

What a lucky dog to have a family who is willing to go that extra mile to take care of him like he needs. I'm not much of a dog person, but he really is quite the looker. :)

Oh, an YAY! for Brandon! :)

First of all - yeah! Props to B. on the new job! Secondly, poor Jericho! I hope that the measures will all work and he'll be around for many more years! Love the photos of him!

He is an amazingly beautiful dog! For a large dog (which I'm assuming he is 45+ lbs) he's doing so well for his age!
